Research the potential employer. Many company websites contain information regarding their business, philosophy, turnover and profits. Alternatively go to your local library or telephone the company and ask for a brochure. Now when you are asked “What do you know about us?” you will be able to answer with confidence. Prepare your answers and examples to demonstrate your experience to commonly asked questions such as:

  • What is the greatest challenge you have faced in your current role?
  • What do you enjoy least and why?
  • What are you looking for in a job now?
  • What do you bring to the teams that you work with?
  • Looking back over your career, where have you been most happy and why?

Plan your journey ensuring that you will arrive a few minutes early to gather your thoughts. Use our useful journey planner links for further information.

You should always look well groomed, professional and comfortable. Remember to be polite and friendly to the receptionist whilst you are waiting, they are often asked afterwards what they thought of you. When you meet the interviewer make eye contact, smile, give a firm handshake and remember their name to use in reply to their questions. You need to give the impression that you are relaxed and confident so try not to fidget and don’t cross your arms.

Relax – you will remember more information and appear more confident. Remember you are also ensuring that this is the right position for you so it is a two way conversation. You will have the opportunity to ask questions of your own for example:

  • What are the main job objectives?
  • What are the immediate priorities / problems?
  • What opportunities are there for development and promotion?
  • What can you tell me about the people I will be working with?
  • What future plans are there for this position?

Don’t exaggerate or lie when answering questions and avoid being defensive or negative about current / previous positions and criticising colleagues or employers. At the end of the interview make sure that you show a real interest in the job and thank the interviewer for their time. After the interview call your consultant as soon as possible with your feedback.
